UAL Online Courses; Worth The Hype?

Hey!

This post is all about my experience on a University of the Arts London online Fashion Buying and Merchandising course. From what I gained, to if it was worth it.

Why Do an Online Course?

Most of us, if not all of us, know that online learning isn't always the best way forward. Having a massive shift from face to face teaching up until my second term of my first year at University, I then had to adapt to the life of online learning.

However, like everything there are pros and there are cons. Moving everything online allowed me the room to grow not only my skills but it also gave me an insight into what life might be like after online Uni, in the world of 'hybrid work'.

"THE WORLD'S BIGGEST FACTORY FOR MAKING TROUBLE"

An online course allows you to not only save everything you do, but it also allows you to refer back to past lectures to ensure you fully understand what is the task ahead. An online course also allows you to take part in something that, if it was face to face, you might not be able to do. For example; having this six week course online allowed me to live and work from home, it didn't require me to travel up for the lectures, or move to another city. I was able to meet people from all over the world, all from the comforts of my own home.

What Courses are Available?

Fashion Buying and Merchandising; Online!

So, when I completed the UAL short course it was Summer 2021, we were in and out of lockdown and by this point I was used to online learning. I'd just finished my second year at Uni, but didnt feel like I was ready to stop learning just yet. I applied for the Fashion Buying and Merchandising short course to give myself a challenge, as well as further my knowledge of the industry. I was taught by an amazing teacher, Eddie Knevett, who not only is a lecturer at UAL but also a highly successful and respected fashion accessories buying manager, with a wealth of experience in buying and merchandising.

It's fair to say that despite this being a 'short course' it did not feel that way. The amount of support and resources we were given was incredible. Despite my background being in Fashion Marketing, the process and teaching of this subject intrigued me. The idea of working with product and analysing trends not only excited me, but it also gave me something to progress with in the future.

An intense, 6 week course, learning a new subject in between my second and third year of Uni. We were given a UAL account where all tasks, video recordings, study guides, and lectures took place, and each week we were tasked with completing specific activities in order to fully grasp the potential of the course. The course covered topics from budgeting to range planning, and having everything online in the same place made it, if anything, easier to organise!

Week 1 - Introduction to the Retail Industry

Worth the Hype?

To put it bluntly - YES.

My experience on the UAL short course, not only helped develop my skill set and knowledge, but it also gave me an insight into how and why the industry works together. Having access to the UAL resources, including being able to speak to Eddie Knevett, was a life changing experience and I can't wait to complete another course after finishing my third year.
